How many cuts
A three-to-eight-minute highlight, a full ceremony record and a thirty-second social cut. The highlight is mastered to -14 LUFS; the ceremony keeps its dynamics and the vows are not compressed. Delivery includes the mix, stems, a cue sheet and a licence note. The licence must cover the couple's private sharing, the photographer's portfolio and social platforms, and it should say whether the score may be re-edited. Couples usually change one track, so name versions so they can be told apart from the start.
Draw the emotional curve
Watch the footage and divide it into arrival, ceremony, vows, recessional, speeches and close, marking which sections must keep production sound. Then choose or generate three pieces: restrained for the ceremony, almost nothing under the vows, bright for the exit, and a return of the opening motif at the end. Place music half a second after an action, leave two seconds of reverb at the out point, and duck under the vows.
Editing and licensing tools
Cut in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, generate with Suno or Udio, and use ACE Studio when a sung line is needed. Repair vows and speeches with iZotope RX, match the highlight's loudness with Ozone. Keep the licence and cue sheet in one package, with title, version and scope written line by line.
Watching with the client
| Section | Emotion | Musical action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Light, expectant | One instrument | Peaking too early |
| Ceremony | Restrained | Low pad | Covering the words |
| Vows | Nearly still | Silence or a very light bed | Swelling strings |
| Exit | Bright | Theme stated in full | The wrong march |
| Speeches | Warm | Mid-low density | Stepping on laughter |
| Close | Settling | Opening motif returns | A sudden stop |
Clients usually cry at the vows and the parents' shots, not at the loudest moment of the score. Watch the cut once with the music off; if the picture does not work, music will not rescue it.
Where it tips into melodrama
Strings fill the vows and swallow what the couple is saying. The same march is used for the entrance and the exit, so the ceremony has no arc. One song carries the whole film and starts repeating by the third minute. The licence covers private viewing only, and a complaint arrives when the photographer posts a portfolio clip. The highlight and the social cut sit at different loudness, so a continuous playback jumps.
