The audio list for a service
A service runs on its liturgy: prelude, processional, hymns, offering, around the sermon, communion, recessional and postlude. Players receive charts in the chosen key, chord sheets, and written intros and interludes; the sound team receives every track, backup accompaniments and a microphone list. In-room, streamed and archived uses are usually three separate permissions, and a live licence does not cover an uploaded replay. Every item on the run sheet carries key, tempo, length and who starts it.
Order the music by liturgy
Get the run sheet and confirm each song's place and length with the service leader. Set the congregation's comfortable range and choose keys on the low side. Prepare intros, interludes and modulations so songs neither stop dead nor crash into each other. Then walk the room: check microphones, backup tracks and stream level, and agree on the cue that starts each song.
Keys, charts and the room
Keep the run sheet in Planning Center or on paper, chords in OnSong or MainStage, backups in Ableton Live or on a spare phone. Write the organ and piano parts into the chart so the left hand does not fight the bass. Take a separate mix from the console for the stream; Ozone applies light limiting only, so the congregation is not squeezed out.
After the service
| Item | Music | Length | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelude | Instrumental | 3–5 min | Establish the key of the day |
| Processional | Congregational song | 3–4 verses | Key suited to voices |
| Offering | Instrumental or choir | 3–4 min | Do not cover the offertory words |
| Communion | Long instrumental | 8–15 min | Loopable, easy to end |
| Recessional | Congregational song | 3–4 verses | Bright, no lingering |
| Postlude | Instrumental | 5 min | Room to leave |
When the congregation cannot reach the top, transpose on the spot rather than explain afterwards. Check the balance of choir and congregation in the replay; the stream mix and the room mix are different jobs.
Two kinds of risk
A song licence may cover projection in the room while streaming and recording need separate clearance, with words, music and arrangement counted separately. An organ prelude uses a copyrighted arrangement and the upload is flagged. A backup track loses power, the piano takes over, and the key does not match. A wireless microphone picks up the room next door during the sermon. The congregation is so loud in the stream that only reverb remains.
