What it lets you finish
It can generate a temp score against a locked cut so a director hears the emotional direction. It can produce several versions of different lengths around the edit points for comparison. It can shape one scene from calm to tense, or write a short sting for a transition. It can re-fit existing music to picture, speeding up, slowing down or changing section. It can export stems so dialogue stays above the score in the mix.
How it works
The tool reads timecode and cut points, sometimes also brightness, motion and dialogue density, then aligns mood tags, duration and beats to those points. Generation is section-based, and export either carries timecode or lands directly in the editor. Most tools offer a locked-picture mode: when the cut changes, the music reflows to the new points. Stem export lets score, dialogue and effects share one timeline.
Limits and traps
First, conforming. Spots and shorts routinely reach a tenth version, and every picture change means re-fitting; automation reflows, but phrases get chopped and sound stitched. Second, sync rights. A temp score can be swapped freely, but once the film ships, territory, media and term of use belong in a sync licence, generated music included. Third, emotional judgement. It knows the scene is "tense", not whether this character deserves tension; the subtle relation between score and performance is still a human call. Fourth, technical format. Mismatched frame rate, resolution, colour or sample rate causes drift, and long-form timecode and drop-frame handling must be settled first. Fifth, loudness under dialogue. A score that is too loud gets pushed back by the mixer, so leave dynamic and spectral room in advance.
Alternatives and pairings
To test direction cheaply, library music is faster and its licensing is standardised. To fit picture exactly, a composer still writes by hand; the tool supplies drafts and variants. Its best place is the pitch, the rough cut and the internal screening: fix direction with it, then replace it for the final. Treat output as a temp score, never as final delivery.
First three things to learn
Learn three things first: confirm frame rate and timecode, lock music to cut points, and read what the sync licence actually covers. Then read the site's pages on film scoring, sync and cue editing, and trailer music before deciding which versions can go to the tool.
