What it lets you finish
A sentence can produce a drum loop, a sustained bed or a one-shot, ready to drag into a sampler. It can add a texture layer to an existing section so the arrangement feels less bare. It can generate several variants at once and let you pick the one that sits. It can turn a reference sound into material of the same character for replacement or layering.
How it works
Generators usually condition on text or audio, synthesise waveform in a latent space, then render to a target length, tempo and key. Some models specialise in drums, others in ambience, and some decompose a reference and recombine it. Results are often dry and need your own reverb and saturation; tempo and key tags are not always written into the file, so alignment happens after import. Cloud generation queues, while local models consume GPU and memory.
Limits and traps
First, rights and training source. Whether output may be used commercially, redistributed in a sample pack, or derived from protected recordings in training all depend on current terms; "generated" does not automatically mean "clear". Second, repetition. The longer the loop, the more the same texture shows; short one-shots last better, and slicing, pitching and filtering generated material beats looping it raw. Third, key and seams. The stated key may only be approximate and loop points often click, so cut at zero crossings and confirm the fundamental before sampling. Fourth, transients and body. Drum attacks tend soft, cymbals thin, lows cloudy; these hide in a mix but not on a lead percussion part. Fifth, control. Text prompts rarely specify which beat breathes; precision means MIDI or recording.
Alternatives and pairings
For full control, record or synthesise and build layers and round-robins in the sampler. For ready-made material with clear terms, buy a commercial library: stable quality, narrower style. Its best role is filling gaps and finding direction: test a character, then replace key layers with recordings or synthesis. Treat output as raw material, not a finished sound.
First three things to learn
Learn three things first: check commercial use and redistribution terms, cut at zero crossings and align key, and break repetition with variants and filtering. Then read the site's pages on sample generation, AI sound design and licensing output before deciding which layers can be fully generated.
