A phone is best at catching the eight bars that just arrived; finishing and delivery still belong on a desk.

The stretch a phone can finish
A hum captured on the commute, four bars built on chord pads at lunch, a drum part added in bed: all can be finished on a phone. It records, stacks tracks, assembles sections from loops, prints a rough but complete mix and sends it to a collaborator. Capture and assembly are its strength, not refinement; fixing an idea beats trying to recall it at a desk.
Input methods and what they cost
Run through this list before recording:
- Built-in mic: fastest, but automatic gain flattens distance and pulls in the room.
- Headset mic: closer voice, more plosives and breath; use a pop filter for singing.
- On-screen keys and chord pads: good for finding harmony, little control over velocity or legato.
- Hum-to-melody: faster lines smear, and slides or grace notes are read as wrong pitches.
- USB audio interface: better sound and latency, but power, adapters and model support need testing.
- Bluetooth headphones: audible delay, playback only, never for tracking.
Rights before the share button
Files from the share button usually carry the platform's compression and loudness treatment. For short video or podcast, export uncompressed and upload it yourself. Built-in loops and sounds are usually licensed only inside a work, not for standalone redistribution; commercial use of generation features follows the subscription tier. Projects live in someone else's cloud, so a new phone, a cancelled plan or a shutdown can lose them; regular stem and MIDI exports are the only insurance.
Where it stops
Dozens of tracks, precise automation, third-party plug-ins and long sessions are heavy for a phone, and an OS update can strand an old project. Monitoring delay and the missing lows of a phone speaker will make a balance that worked there fall apart elsewhere. For delivery, treat the phone as a sketchpad and move the project to a desktop.
Order of learning
Measure latency and test the mic, settle an export preset for sharing, then read the loop and generation terms. After that, look at latency, monitoring and short-video scoring.
Listen in the library
All tracks from midicn-lib — inline badge is the license tier (C1 commercial / C2 non-commercial / C3 study only).
