What it lets you finish
It can make music as switchable layers: exploration, combat and victory stacked from game parameters. It can insert stingers and transitions on events so the score follows player action. It can batch-process dialogue and ambience, unifying loudness, denoising and building random variants. It can route generated material into the event system so details differ slightly on each visit. It can audition the whole logic in the editor and catch seams and level jumps before export.
How it works
Middleware manages events, parameters, buses and runtime mixing; AI sits mostly at two ends. Generators mass-produce variants and treatments; at runtime, rules and randomisation assemble material into non-repeating sequences. Adaptive scores are usually vertical layers and horizontal re-sequencing, driven by player state and switched by rules rather than hard cuts. Generative models rarely compose live on the player's machine; most assets are made during development, and runtime only selects and blends.
Limits and traps
First, runtime budget. Every layer costs a decoder and effects path, and memory and CPU are tight on consoles and phones; more generated assets make the budget harder. Second, reproducibility. Randomised results make a bug hard to reproduce, so tests and replays need fixed seeds and logs, or "it sounded wrong" cannot be traced. Third, seams. Small errors in tails, reverb decay and beat alignment are heard over a long session. Fourth, platform and licensing. Console certification imposes hard rules on format, dynamic range and voice; middleware is licensed per seat or revenue share, and generated assets carry separate terms. Fifth, it does not understand play. When tension is earned and how quiet exploration should be belong to level design; the tool executes parameters.
Alternatives and pairings
For small projects, the engine's own audio system is enough and saves a middleware layer and licence. Use middleware for complex state machines and cross-platform mixing; adaptivity works without AI, which only adds assets and speed. A custom pipeline suits large teams with an audio programmer, at high maintenance cost. Prepare generated assets as loopable, layer-ready files before they enter middleware.
First three things to learn
Learn three things first: how events and parameters drive layers, how loop points and transitions are set, and what runtime memory and platform limits allow. Then read the site's pages on game audio, adaptive music and interactive layers before deciding where generation enters.
