Musician Livelihood
What gets displaced is rarely composition but session work, library cues and demo vocals

The problem
AI hits musicians first where substitution is easiest. Advertising cues, short-video beds, audiobook underscoring, demo vocals, straightforward studio accompaniment. Low unit price, scattered demand, exactly the range generation handles well. The harder work, live, relational and judgement-heavy, resists replacement, but there is less of it.
How it works
The market sorts by good enough. Clients rarely want the best music, they want music that will not be wrong. Once generation reaches not-wrong, price falls, and players, arrangers and sound designers who lived on volume feel it first. The tools also lower the entry barrier, so more people compete for the same jobs. Credit and royalty flows shift as well. A session used to leave a credit that led to the next session, and now that labour often leaves no record at all.
Practice
Move toward what the tools cannot do. Live performance, improvisation, work that follows picture or a performer in real time, teaching, sound design, mixing and mastering, cross-cultural consulting, all of which require presence and judgement. Learn the tools and use them as sketchpads and material sources, but deliver what they cannot, including the touch of a real player, traceable rights and stems that can still be changed. Keep credits, ask to be named, and write every job into a portfolio. Price by value rather than hours, and say that you sell judgement and accountability. Employers have a corresponding duty. If a part needs a human, pay a human. If generated material is used, disclose it and verify the licence. Do not extract free labour under the label of a test.
What to listen for
In the piano part of Sapphische Ode, how an accompaniment holds the voice, which is judgement rather than filler. In the Monk adaptation, the craft of harmonisation. In the ensemble Maple Leaf Rag, the tightness and breathing that come from rehearsal. In the highlife loop, the drummer's small work replaced by a pack, steady, but with nobody choosing.
