Cross-Border Rights
The same licence may not answer who gets paid across a border
Related
A licence that looks complete at home can arrive in another country unable to answer even who collects the money. Rights, collective management, export control and dubbing are four separate lines. Writing "worldwide" in a contract does not connect them.
Four variables
| Variable | Common local practice | What to confirm across borders | Possible cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope and term | Judged under local law | Country of origin, term, public-domain status | Clearing rights again |
| Collection and collective management | A local society collects | Who collects in the other country, whether the two societies reciprocate | Double payment or missed revenue |
| Export and sanctions | Usually not considered | Whether software, models or services are restricted | Delayed delivery or a changed plan |
| Dubbing and release | One language, one platform | Voice territory, subtitle versions, platform regions | Re-recording or re-signing |
Rights stay layered when they travel
The composition, the recording, the performance and the voice are separate. A sync licence may cover audiovisual synchronisation but not reproduction and distribution; a master licence may cover one territory only. A platform claiming global availability does not mean every national collecting society receives money. For a cross-border project, list the rights needed in each region as rows instead of covering them with one word.
Split dubbing and release into three
The voice licence states territory, term, media, and whether cloning or training is allowed. Translation is handled separately, including translator credit and the scope of adaptation. Release planning confirms platform coverage, subtitle versions and cue sheets. Signing all three on one sheet is convenient until something goes wrong and nobody can separate them. For synthetic voice, ask one more question: whose voice is the source, and does that consent cover these languages and regions.
Export control asks about the service
Software, model weights and cloud processing can cross borders, and export control looks beyond a hard drive. Whether a territory can receive a delivery, access it remotely, or have local staff process the material depends on the shape of the service, not only on whether a file can be shipped. Classification and permissions belong with a specialist.
Where it breaks first
Assuming worldwide means worldwide; assuming collecting societies reciprocate automatically; a voice actor's consent that names only one country; platform terms that conflict with local law and nobody checks. Split the clearance sheet by region, with source, term, contact and open question in every row.
