Accent and Language
Accent is a shift in stress and phonemes, not a timbre preset; settle language coverage before tone.

Accent is not a tone
Ask a tool for an accented voice and it usually hands you a timbre. What really changes is the phoneme inventory and the rules of prosody. A model that sings English and then French has to change consonants, vowels and stress placement; swap only the tone and you get a foreign voice reading a foreign language with its native habits. Before deciding whether a synthetic take is usable, establish which language and which variety it sings, then judge the tone.
Three ways it drifts
Phoneme substitution comes first: an unseen vowel is pushed into the nearest native category, so a French nasal turns into an "on" with nasality and German ü becomes u. Stress placement comes second: in English a noun and a verb can share a spelling and differ only in stress, and the wrong choice changes the sentence. Levelling comes third: every syllable gets the same length, erasing Japanese long vowels and geminates or Chinese neutral tones. The third is easiest to miss because the voice still sounds human; only the meaning suffers.
By language
| Language | Usually lost | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| English | Final consonants, stress | Whether noun and verb forms keep their stress apart |
| French | Nasal vowels, liaison | Whether words connect across the boundary |
| German | Compound stress, voicing | Whether word endings are swallowed |
| Chinese | Tone, neutral tone, erhua | Whether homophones are separated by tone |
| Japanese | Long vowels, geminates, pitch accent | Whether mora counts are evened out |
Checking, and where to stop
Use a native listener, not a colleague who is merely fluent. Hand them the text and ask which words failed; errors that cluster on one consonant or one position point to the model, while errors scattered everywhere point to the mix or the diction. Singing is harder to judge than speech because vibrato and long notes cover consonants, so drop the backing to a minimum during the check. Do not let a synthetic voice carry critical information in legal, medical or children's content. For minority languages and dialects, confirm that the model covers that variety; a supported language on a product page is not the same as the one you need. When in doubt, give the foreign line to a singer and keep synthesis for backing or a demo.
